Well it's already that time of year again, a new school year is getting ready to begin (whether I'm ready or not) :) While I do love my job, I hate to have to leave home. I feel like summer has just started! My Grandma is biting at the bit to be able to come over and keep our little doodlebug while I'm at school. I'm so glad that she's still able to do that for us.
This year is different. As I was watching him play in the tub tonight, I realized this is my first school year going in as a mother. I could feel the tears in my eyes because I remember all too well going to school 3 years ago, pregnant, but not knowing if my babies were going to make it. I remember walking into school that year and thinking how things were going to change. God had other plans. But now, I am a mom and I couldn't be happier. He brings so much joy to our lives. That heartache and sting of infertility is still there but now my prayers have come to life in this sweet baby boy. I am so, so thankful that he is in our family and for his birthmother who chose life.
Party plans are up and running for Saturday too! At first I wasn't sure how many would be coming but we have been overwhelmed with family and friends that are going to make it! I'm so excited that they are going to come celebrate our "official" family!

Poor little buddy
Well our little guy had to have a circumcision today! He's done so well and he's slept most of the afternoon. I'm glad we were able to go ahead and get that over with.
Things are going so well here. We are head over heels in love with this little boy. He has captured our hearts for sure. It all feels so much more real now! Our church had a luncheon/shower for us yesterday and it was a lot of fun. Tommy was able to be involved and we had a great time. I'll have to post some pictures later. We have a family/friends shower on Saturday and then one at my school next week. It's funny with how little you can "get by" with. The only thing we really needed/wanted was a little bouncy seat for him. My mom picked that up this weekend for us so we can both eat dinner together and not have to take turns holding him :) He's been spoiled by lots of visits!
Tomorrow we have our first post placement visit. Our social worker is really eager to meet him. We also had some pictures taken of him this weekend. I'll have to do a picture post tomorrow! They turned out so cute, and of course we ended up with what seems like a million pictures :)
The kids at school now know why I've been out and it's been funny hearing some of the comments. From, "I didn't know she was pregnant" to "Is she coming back Monday" it's been really funny to hear them. The best so far though, is an email I received today from 2 boys in my 6th period class. I'm posting the email here but I've changed the names.
HELLO MRS E!!!!! THIS IS A CLASS EMAIL MAINLY FROM "Boy 1" AND "Boy 2"! WE WERE JUST CHECKING IN ON "Boy 1's name" JR. AND MAKING SURE HE IS OK.....THAT IS HIS NAME RIGHT? REMEMBER U PROMISED ME THAT LAST YEAR? BTW WE WERE ON THE CASE EARLY AND FIGURED IT OUT FAST! THE CLASS WOULD LIKE A PIX OF DA BABA! LATER GATOR! PS DO U LIKE THE PIC? I THINK IT IS VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERYVERY VERY VERY GOOD

Back to reality
Yesterday was the first day back at work. Thankfully we had a teacher's workday to help ease the transition. I am so not ready to be back yet :) Tommy told me, well at least you had off 2 weeks, but I told him, it sure doesn't feel like it! I think this was the fastest vacation time ever. Report cards go out at the beginning of next week so I have to finish writing comments for my 85 students, yuck! The worst part about teaching :) The kids came back today and they were all excited to share about their Christmas vacations. Many of them gave me hugs and greeted me this morning so that helps with the transition back (see middle schoolers aren't so bad after all).
I went back to Zumba last night. I really like it. I'm going to try to go 2-3 times a week. I'm excited to see how all of this hard work is going to pay off :)
I know many of us that are waiting have that question of when things are going to happen for our families. The waiting is so hard, probably because we have no control. I think it's during these times that we learn to stretch our faith and rely solely on God and His provisions for us. There are so many times when I think, I wonder if this will be our last ___ as just the two of us. I think this time of year is that much harder because there aren't all sorts of things to look forward to like there are with the holidays. When we first started the adoption process, in June 2009, I had no idea what we were in for. Our social workers told us to expect a 2-3 year wait. We were officially approved on February 17th so we're almost at that 1 year mark. It's almost hard to believe that it's already been that long, but in other ways it feels like it's been forever. I was talking with my friend K in Florida who is also going through the adoption process (they are the ones that are currently matched with twins)! She told me, I know it's hard and it's sometimes hard to hear but God's timing is perfect. He lets us experience things that our minds can't even fully comprehend and yet He is there every step of the way to hold our hands or in some cases hold us together. They've been through 2 failed matches and I can't wait to see this situation unfold over the next few weeks (the babies should be here by the end of January if not before).
I want each of you to know that I'm praying my heart out for you, no matter what you're waiting for. I think God has awesome things in store for each of us. We just have to be ready to hold on for the ride!

Adventures
It's always a week of adventures before a break! This week has proved no different :) It's one of the reasons I am one of those "crazy" people that actually love teaching middle schoolers. You just never know what is going to happen from day to day. They are really sweet, most of the time, and always give me a reason to smile. I may change my mind about that once we have a middle school child :) Yesterday, we had a reason to laugh. One of my students, we'll just call him Pepe, is a very active boy. Very active :) Anyways, during my 4th period class my boss comes in and says, what homework do you have tonight? Then he says, you're never going to believe what has happened. In between, 3rd and 4th periods our students have a 15 minute break. Most of them go to the cafeteria and have a snack. Well "Pepe" was hanging with his friends and eating some chips. His tongue then gets stuck in his braces. When my boss tells me this, all I can do is laugh and think about the Christmas Story where the boy gets his tongue stuck to a flag pole. They couldn't get up with his parents so they called another parent in to take him to the orthodontist. I know it hurt and he couldn't talk. The orthodontist took the bracket off and freed the tongue :) He then came back to school, of course, halfway through my class. He proudly told us that he survived and I responded with and I guess they didn't have to take off half of your tongue. He said, when my dad finally got there, he couldn't even look at me he thought it was so funny. (glad I wasn't the only one that thought it was funny) He also said his orthodontist said, in his 21 years of practice he had never seen anything quite like this. All of the other kids were worried about their tongues after this incident. See I told you we seldom have dull moments :)
I also forgot to post about my weight loss last week. Weight watchers kicked off a new plan so last week was my first week giving it a try. It's really different from the old one but I think I like it. Anyways, I was down 2.4 pounds!! I really needed that little boost. After Christmas, my best friend and I are going to tackle a Zumba class.
On the adoption front....My best friend called this afternoon and told me that one of her clients came in today and began talking about her daughter. To make a long story short, basically, the woman's daughter is pregnant. The Grandma (my friend's client), is already raising one of her children and she said she can't afford to raise this one. They both feel that adoption is the best plan for her daughter's baby (she's due in January). She then goes on to say, wouldn't it be great if we knew of a couple who wanted a baby. So of course, my friend passed along our information. Now I have learned not to get too excited about these situations but you just don't know. She told me that the woman was really excited to get our information. She said I don't know if she'll call but I wanted you to know. I told her that in these situations you just don't know what may happen. We'll just continue to pray that God will send us the child that is supposed to come home to us. I guess at least that was a little news though :)

Feeling great!
I think I've mentioned before that Tommy and I have been on a quest to lose weight! While it has been challenging, at times, we have stuck with the plan and it's starting to pay off. When we weighed last night, I was down .6 and he was down .2. I know that doesn't sound like a lot but his total is 12 pounds and mine is 21 (I started way before he did). I'm glad that those numbers are starting to go down! We'll have to see what next week holds.
Last weekend we had a really great time hanging out with friends and family. Tomorrow looks like we'll be heading out in the boat for a relaxing "day at sea"! I'm really ready for the weekend. Why is it that 4 day work weeks always seem so long?
We've decided against the cruise for now. Mainly because adoptions aren't covered under anything (and I mean anything) so if we were chosen during that time, we'd lose any money we had already paid. I think we're going to do some "little" trips just to give us a break from the day to day things. We are thinking about going to Savannah, GA for our anniversary in November.
School is still going great so that's a plus! I always forget how tired it makes me though. Tommy and I were joking around last night when I asked him what was going to happen when we had a baby in our house and we'll have to get up during the night :) Also last night, Tommy had to go back out to work, the phone rang (our caller ID pops up on the TV) and I realize that I don't know the number (it just said cell phone). I immediately think, "oh my, wonder if it's our social worker?"; it's the first time I've felt like that. Needless to say, it was a friend from church calling to give us her new cell phone number :) Oh well, maybe we'll get that one soon!

Warning!
We are now under a tropical storm warning. That means conditions are likely in 36 hours. One of our local news stations is now saying it's moving to the west a little bit more than what they wanted to see. So who knows! It looks like it will just brush by here which honestly isn't a big deal. We have nor'easters with stronger winds than that. So for now it's wait and see :)
I thought you might like a little bit of middle school humor. We have a dress code policy and part of it says that their shorts have to be 6 inches from their knees. Well the girls usually fall into trouble on this one. So today I ask a few girls to go see the dean and let her "check" their short lengths. A few of the boys thought they would humor me and roll their shorts up to see if they would pass "inspection." I told them I was going to have nightmares about it! The funny thing is most of the boys wear shorts past their knees so when they rolled them up all you see is stark white legs. I had the dean come down and "check" them too plus I knew she needed a good laugh. She told them if they wanted to wear short shorts, they had to be 6 inches from the knee. Needless to say it was pretty entertaining.
It had me thinking though about all of the stupid things I did in middle school. Do you remember what you did?

Lost in translation?
Do you ever get that feeling that you're an outsider who's looking in? Or maybe share something with someone but they either didn't get what you were saying or they just chose to overlook it and move on/do their own thing? I'm sitting here right now with a full mind, lots of stuff swirling around inside. This "lost" feeling is strange and it's been bothering me for a few weeks now (and it has nothing to do with the adoption). I feel like sometimes people put on this facade that they're something better, more experienced, or can do things better than you mentality but in reality they're swimming along just like all of the rest of us trying to find their way, just not strong enough to admit it. I hate when people try to express a thought and then that thought gets twisted or they then look at you like you're the one who's done something wrong. I can see why there are so many people who have a hard time trusting. I know most of this makes no sense and it's a bunch of rambled/jumbled thoughts but I needed to get it out. I'm so thankful I have a husband that listens and understands and gives thoughtful advice. Sometimes I feel like it's us vs. the world, in more ways than one :) Together we make a great team!
Ok, so enough of that--my own little vent session :) School is going really well. I've already been observed and had a good response from that. My students (aka "my kids") remember a lot from last year so we've been able to use more Spanish in class which has been fun. They told me on Friday that I was a "gum sniper" because I can usually always catch them (probably because I'm such an avid gum chewer) :) The only downfall is having to get back into the getting up early routine!
We have had a great weekend. We did some major cleaning yesterday and last night for dinner we grilled shrimp and bacon wrapped scallops. I can't even begin to tell you how good it was. My best friend joined us and she was impressed too! Tommy said Chef Ramsey had nothing on him! The weekends always go by so fast. This week we'll have to watch the weather because of Hurricane Earl. Looks like he may be close to here.

Just when you think you're over it
Well I thought I was over "it." The "it" being that down feeling you get when something happens to someone that you really want to happen to you. Not so much as in being pregnant, because I honestly believe I'm over that, but the becoming a Mom part. I found out yesterday that an old high school friend is pregnant. We don't talk anymore so it's not like she's even a close friend. I think what bothered me the most about it is I remember when she got married and how "anti-kid" she was (and from what I had heard still pretty much was). I think it caught me more off guard than anything else. I honestly haven't felt this way in a long time. I really am happy for the people around me that have children/are having children. I guess it's the whole story with her that made me think, great why not me?! I had a long prayer time in church yesterday to get myself back because let's face it, it's not healthy nor is it good to feel that way. So I picked myself up and enjoyed the rest of my day!
We had a great weekend. Well, I did. Poor Tommy had to work most of the weekend to fix some problems they had due to that bad thunderstorm we had at the end of the week. We did go shrimping again on Friday night with one of Tommy's coworkers. It was a lot of fun. We even brought the "bubble boxes" and a bucket and caught some "critters" for our saltwater tanks at school. I have 3 baby flounders and 2 Atlantic Lookdowns. I think they were pretty happy to get out of the buckets and into the tanks this morning.
So far school is going really well. The first couple of weeks are always busy with extra events at night so I'll be glad when those are behind us. Hope everyone is having a Happy Monday!

Great day!
Today's first day went great! The kids seem to be super sweet but boy am I tired! My 7th graders were pretty shy. In one class I even tried to joke with them to break the ice but they didn't get it. I could hear the crickets chirping, ha ha! Oh well maybe tomorrow! Many of them thanked me as they left my room which is great to hear. One of my new students was pretty upset that his mom had put each classes materials in plastic grocery bags and labeled them. He was already frazzled because everything is new but I think it made him feel awkward because everyone else had all of their stuff in one big (messy) pile. I helped him carry all of his "bags" to his locker. I told him we could take them out if he wanted but he decided to keep them in there. I noticed when he came to class, he had ditched the bag :) So there's one of today's school stories for you!
We also had a HUGE thunderstorm at the end of school today, probably the worst one we've had all summer. It usually happens every year on the first day. The lightening was so bad we ended up having to keep all of the kids inside, 20 minutes past the time they were supposed to get out. So that made for an interesting dismissal time!
On the adoption front, our social worker emailed us back today! She said that I could "bother" her anytime, so that was nice to hear :) She said they had just finished up the second round of meetings for new potential adoptive parents. She also said another one of her family's were matched with a baby due next month. As for us, this is what she said "I do know I have gotten good feedback from your profile book and several birthmothers have given you very serious consideration." She said some have decided to parent and others chose another family, she doesn't know why but we all believe those were just not the babies God had in mind for us. I'm just glad to know there's been some activity and our profile book isn't just sitting on a desk collecting dust.

Ready or not here they come!
Tomorrow is the first day of school for students! Yikes! I can't believe it's already time. I'm ready though! At least when the students are there the day goes by a lot faster, plus they are always there for a good story or two :) Tomorrow will also be my first day of actually "getting" up out of bed early.....I'm so not looking forward to that!
This week my mind has been consumed with adoption things. I have no idea why, well a few ideas, but it's strange that it would hit now. Everyone has been asking about news from the adoption front so maybe that's it. I really don't mind them asking. It's nice to know they're thinking about us and I know they want it to happen for us too. I also had a very vivid dream the other night about a baby so maybe that's what is adding to this. So, I ended up emailing our social worker on Sunday night. We haven't heard back from her yet. Normally she's really good with emailing back right away so I assume she's out of town or something else is going on.
I think it's that feeling of the unknown that keeps you wondering. Hopefully she'll be able to tell us something, it doesn't have to even be specific to us, but just something that will help ease this feeling right now. But for now, I'll have lots to occupy my time with and even though my students are middle schoolers, they still like the support from us.
I read this yesterday. "Peace is the ability to remain faithful in spite of the panic of unfulfilled dreams." "The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me; your love, O Lord, endures forever-do not abandon the works of your hands." Psalm 138:8

Busy, busy
Well I've been back at work for 2 days and I'm already ready for a vacation :) Ha ha, just kidding--well maybe not really :) The first two days back have been really good. It's nice to catch up with my fellow coworkers and find out what everyone did over the summer. I still can't believe it's over.
I have 86 students this year (don't forget I teach middle school so they change classes). I *think* they are going to be a great group. It's hard to believe they'll be coming back to class on Thursday. Hope I'm ready by then :)
So we are 3 days shy of hitting the 6 month mark of waiting. A half a year already. In many ways it's hard to believe we've been waiting that long; in other ways it feels like it's been an eternity (especially if you consider we started this journey of trying to have a family almost 4 years ago). I've been praying we'll hear something, even if it's just an update soon. I don't like that part about it but that's the way our agency works and there's not really anything I can do about it---except annoy my social worker and that's probably not the best thing to do!
Tommy had a good check-up with the heart doctors on Tuesday so we are very thankful that things are going so well right now. Now we are on a major mission to keep losing weight! Hopefully we'll be able to stick to it.
Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

New beginnings
Well today is it. The last official day of my summer vacation (insert a very sad girl here) :) I can't believe it's over. This has to be one of the fastest summers I have had in a long time! The good news about that is that I haven't driven myself crazy thinking about the adoption. I've even refrained from emailing our social worker this month. Last summer we were busy making sure all of the paperwork was complete and waiting to hear on approvals from our applications. The summer before that we were totally involved with the IVF and then the miscarriage. This summer was just about having fun! I really think I needed it. I've gotten to spend time with our amazing friends, go to the beach, sleep in (oh how I will miss that one), shop, and travel. That's probably why the summer has felt so short.
But a new school year brings a new beginning. I'm able to start all over again. I teach 7th and 8th graders. Half of the 8th grade I taught last year so I already know them (I know almost all of them because our school is so small). The one great thing about the beginning of the school year is reconnecting with those kids and having the opportunity to start fresh, not just me but them as well.
Who knows what this year will bring! Of course I'm praying my heart out that I won't be able to finish the year out because we'll be bringing home a baby, but that's not in my hands either. So for now I'll just keep on keeping on! Here's to the 2010-2011 year! **You guys will be in for a treat once school starts back and I have middle school drama to share with you!

A little about me
First, thanks for the warm welcome (thanks for the shout-out A)
It's so neat to see people come together with common interests and goals and I know for many of us it has meant the long road of infertility (but we'll save that story for another day)!
Tommy and I have been married for ten years-1999 (wow I feel old). When we were first married, we had both just completed college. I was working as a Speech Language Pathologist Assistant (that's a mouthful) and I loved working with the kids. The company....that's another story. We talked about things and decided I would quit working there. I knew I wanted to work with kids but I wasn't sure in what capacity. I was hired that school year as a Teacher's Assistant for a 1st grade classroom. I knew that if I could make it there, I would like to further my education with a teaching degree. Well, it turns out I loved it!
Then the hard task of deciding what to major in and what ages came into play. I have always had a love for Spanish and remembered a lot of it from high school (I became "instant" translator at the school I worked at). I thought about English as a Second Language but later decided I would major in Spanish; if I got tired of teaching I could always go into translating or something different.
I have been in the classroom for 10 years and I have just completed my 5th year of teaching at my current school. I teach middle school (7th and 8th grades)--no I'm not crazy...yet :)
We live on the coast and love it! We are surrounded by family and friends and share our home with our dog, Bailey.
Doesn't she have the sweetest face? This was after she ran back up on the dock from swimming last weekend.
So there you have it...just a little about me!
