We received an email from our social worker today giving us a little bit of encouragement. She said they have had quite a few placements lately so that's good news. Hopefully we'll hear something soon.
I need your help though! The more I get into all of this, the more I see how many people hold fundraisers to help with their adoption costs. So, my questions....for those of you not doing this (even if you aren't adopting) what do you think about it? For those of you fundraising now, what do you think about it? What are some of the best ones to do? How did you get involved doing it?
We both have super supportive family and friends so I'm pretty sure most would back us. I guess I just wonder if people will question us for doing it.
I'd love to have your thoughts about it though.
We had a HUGE garage sale in April...although I do not think this is that time of year...with donations we raised a total of $6500...it was awesome. Then we did our cookbooks...so far I think we have raised around $4000 from them. Our couple of fundraiser worked well & people were more than willing to help, buy or donate. Although I think that that cookbook was a better idea b/c then people could donate and get something in return. Let me know if you have any questions...bkmulder@hotmail.com.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't done it because adoption through our state is free, but we will definitely do so when we start our international adoption! It think it's great!
ReplyDeleteWhat great news from your social worker!!! I have hard of quite a few people doing garage sales :) I think fundraising is a great idea- I always wish I could donate more...
ReplyDeleteI am sure it is comforting hearing from your social worker in this waiting period! We had two big yard sales back in the spring...we were not as successful as the lady up top, but between the two it brought in about $800. We also have a friend at church who sells Thirty-One Gifts. I hosted a party, and instead of me getting hostess benefits, she gave us her total commission from the party (about $1300 in sales so we got a check for around $335). Other than that I have Craig's Listed whatever is not nailed down :o) and have sold some of my handmade soaps. We have friends that have done the t-shirts and a lot of folks we know thought it was a GREAT idea, but hubby was not comfortable with it. Hope you find something that suits you well! Thanks for commenting on my blog post today!
ReplyDeleteHey :-) I've always felt that when God calls you to do something (especially something like adopt, which you have ZERO control over) that you should do any and everything possible to carry out His plan. BUT there's a right and a wrong way to do it. Make sure that your walk matches your talk; that you're not buying new TV's and furniture and cars when you're asking people for help; they're sacrificing, too :-)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE garage sales, craigslist, fliers to your local Planned Parenthood, etc. I think that if Missionaries can ask for support through letters in the mail, then so can we. Just be sure that whatever you decide to do, you decide to do because God hasn't told you NOT to. And... be prepared to fend off those who disagree and let their stance be known. If you haven't been through adoption, you have no right to judge (just as in any other situation, too)... you and your husband need to sit down and agree on a plan of response when someone doesn't like what you're doing. Scripture always helps and the "don't judge" response, too.
Good luck! I love watching you go through your journey; thanks for walking with us through ours, too. It's a crazy process and one that none other can match!
